Join us to learn with women just like you. All 3 sessions are planned for women working on or managing dairy or beef cow herds with lots of hands-on and discussion opportunities.
Session 1
Wednesday, February 10, 1-3 pm
Iowa Lakes College Farm (Beef Barn)
Calving - using Frosty ( a life-size cow model) participants will practice putting chains on a calf to pull it and learn how to assist a cow in calving. Other topics include immediate calf care and colostrum. This session is led by Dr. Caitlyn Messerschmidt, veterinarian at Iowa State University.
Session 2
Wednesday, February 24, 1-3 pm
Iowa Lakes College Farm (Beef Barn)
Calf Nutrition and Facilities - ISU beef and dairy specialists and Iowa Lakes instructors will lead participants in how to help calves nurse, selecting colostrum products, mixing milk replacers, and how to wean calves from milk and start them on dry feed. Participants will view both maternal and calf housing.
Session 3
Wednesday, March 10, 1-3 pm
Iowa Lakes College Farm (Beef Barn)
Health - Determining whether an animal is healthy or unhealthy is the focus. Activities include handling medicines and vaccines, giving injections, safety in working cattle, and two national programs Beef Quality Assurance and Farmers Assuring Responsible Management. Sessions led by ISU and Iowa Lakes Instructors.
